“Witch” Shall Not Be Allowed to Live

During Halloween, a teacher told us stories about Salem, Massachusetts, and how they burned people at the stake for being a witch. One student asked if the story was a Halloween joke. "No", the teacher said, "it actually happened". Where do you think they got the idea? The Bible.

Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
Exodus 22:18

There shall not be found among you anyone that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
Deuteronomy 18:10

If a “witch” can pass through the fire unhurt, then why try to burn them? Did they ever figure that one out?

First “Haunted House” and Haunted Ship

Around Halloween, most kids love to visit those haunted houses. Here is a haunted house straight from the Bible.

Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very subtilly.
1 Samuel 23:22

For those sea farers, we have a haunted ship in scripture. Many a sea captain has given a tale or two of a haunted ship.

And they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed, that wast inhabited of seafaring men, the renowned city, which wast strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, which cause their terror to be on all that haunt it!
Ezekiel 26:17

A friend of mine served in the navy. He shared with us a trick he played on a “green” mariner. He told this “green” mariner the story of their haunted ship. What this new sailor didn’t know was how the friend had prepared the ship for this haunted voyage before they left port. Days aboard ship went by as the friend prepared this virgin voyager for the final scare. Little changes would occur; a flying tissue, a damp misty breeze, water coming from nowhere, weird creepy noises. Then he shared a description of the monster that lurked inside the ship. The friend spent hours roaming through tiny crawl spaces on the ship, moving through passageways waiting, watching, making ready for the creature’s appearance. Finally, after all was ready, the horrible-looking mask and gloves were put on, then he peered at this “green” sailor who gasped in fright. Then quietly he snuck away, never telling him who it was.

Visit the other haunt in 1 Samuel 30:31.

Orion’s Belt

Orion’s Belt associated with sorrow and suffering, is linked to Halloween because of its rise about the same time of the year. What a powerful superstition to make it through generations.

Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.
Amos 5:8

Organs and Harps Invented by Canaanites

Why do we use organs and harps in our Church services when there invention came by the descendants of Cain? (See Genesis 4.)

17. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare . . .
21. And his brother's name was Jubal:
he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
Genesis 4:17, 21

Through the atoning power of Jesus Christ the Lord turns bad into good and can heal every wound.

 2. I, having accomplished and finished the will of him whose I am, even the Father, concerning me--having done this that I might subdue all things unto myself--

3. Retaining all power, even to the destroying of Satan and his works at the end of the world, and the last great day of judgment, which I shall pass upon the inhabitants thereof,  judging every man according to his works and the deeds which he hath done.
4. And surely every man must repent or suffer, for I, God, am endless.

(Doctrine and Covenants 19:2 - 4)

Some feel God has forgiven their sins but the “works” of sin still have their influence. If we will follow Jesus Christ, His atoning blood will destroy and obliterate the works of darkness!

The Atonement of Jesus Christ works on the Lord's curse of Cain’s descendants in the same way. Do we not use the organ in Church? Are we prejudiced by whom invented the harp or organ? Do we consider the past stigma of these musical instruments? Evidence shows the curse of Cain's descendants is gone!  Can you imagine church music without the organ or harp.

The Band

Last night we had the privilege of watching and listening to our niece, Rachel play in the Blue Thunder Marching Band. The halftime show was good and the music was excellent. The game, well the football team was not so successful.

When I asked why the band didn’t play more to help bolster the team, the response was, “music doesn’t do much to help!”

Music plays an enormous role in our lives. Try watching a movie without sound. What would our movies be like without music setting the mood of the scene?

Music plays a huge role in the Scriptures. Think of how “The Walls of Jericho” fell. (See Joshua 6:20, Hebrews 11:30) Remember the prophesy announcing Christ’s Second Coming (See Matthew 24:31, 1Thessalonians 4:16) when the trumpet shall sound.

Rachel, in answer to your question about a “band” in the Scriptures. The word “band” is mentioned 66 times in the Bible, though most of those are not related to music. My favorite “band” scripture is “Cornelius in an Italian Band,” Acts 10:1. I wonder if Cornelius played the coronet.

1 There was a certain man in Cæsarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

(Acts 10:1)
